Admissions - No Appointment Necessary

Our Pet Surrender Policy

The decision to surrender your pet is a serious one. SPCA Tampa Bay will work hard to find a home for your pet, however, SPCA Tampa Bay does euthanize animals for behavioral and medical reasons. More on our Humane Euthanasia Policy.

Unlike many non-profit shelters, SPCA Tampa Bay allows owners to surrender their pets without an appointment. Our doors are open six days a week (closed Mondays). We admit all canine and feline breeds as well as sick and injured strays. Healthy strays are referred to Pinellas County Animal Services.

Admission for Pets from Outside of Pinellas County: Animals that are from outside Pinellas County must be "owned pets," not strays. No more than two such pets will be admitted from one person or family each week. Animals from outside Pinellas County must have had a CURRENT rabies vaccination dated at least six months prior to admission. Kittens must have a mother who meets this criteria. Proof will be required. A donation for admission is also required.

Things to Consider Before You Surrender Your Pet

Are you the legal owner of the animal?

Does everyone in the household agree with the surrender of the pet?
Only the legal owner can surrender the pet. If there is any doubt, please take the pet home with you and do NOT surrender it today. Take some more time to think it over until you are certain whether surrendering the pet is the right step. If surrendering is best for you and your family, you are welcome to come back again tomorrow. We are open Tuesday – Sunday for your convenience.

Have you tried other options for animal placement?
You may want to check the other animal shelters in the area to determine their euthanasia policy. They usually have limited admissions policies that differ from ours.

  • Humane Society Tampa Bay: 813-876-7138

What will happen to the pet?
We determine the adoptability of each surrendered pet. We consider the criteria listed here, among other matters, in the adoptability determination. In the event that we determine your animal to be unadoptable, it will most likely be euthanized.
